YoPo: The Yogurt Pump

Normally I would consider myself an ice cream person over frozen yogurt. But, when it comes to The Yogurt Pump on Franklin I start to question my values. The local, family-owned, frozen yogurt shop became North Carolina’s first frozen yogurt shop in 1982. Since my existence in 2003, it has become my favorite spot for froyo. Not many establishments have been able to stand the tests of time on Franklin, especially with rent costs. That speaks to the sincerity of my recommendation to give YoPo a try.

Location

Just off the main drag on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, and a bit tucked away near He’s Not Here, is YoPo. It’s recognizable from its red sign with the YoPo logo sticking out from the…

Union Special

It doesn’t get any better (or fresher!) than a sandwich piled high with veggies between slices of bread that came from a loaf baked just earlier today.  Unless of course, that loaf was crafted on-site in the very same building you enjoyed that sandwich!  This is the level of freshness that fans of Union Special in Raleigh keep coming back for, and if you haven’t tried this gem yet, consider this your invitation!

The experience at Union Special starts well before you step foot through the doors.  We’re convinced that those comforting scents of bread and flaky goodness actually sneak their way into our car before the artsy building is even in sight.  One thing’s for sure though, as soon as you take the first step…

Historic Oak View County Park

Historic Oak View County Park, located in the southeast part of Wake County, is 27 acres of natural beauty and history. With its green gardens, farmland and picnic areas, it is the perfect setting for an outdoor experience for everyone.

The land has a rich history dating all the way back to 1940. Its history reflects the transition from an antebellum plantation into sharecropping and tenant farming. The Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Division took over operation at Oak View in 1995, making it the first historic site in the Wake County park system.

This is a great park to bring little ones for multiple reasons! One of the park's attractions is its friendly farm animals,…

Maple View Sunset

Ice cream is my favorite dessert hands down. If I were to recommend any ice cream place in the RDU area, it would be Maple View Farm Ice Cream. When the weather gets nice, I make sure to catch a sunset at Maple View. They have hundreds of delicious and unique ice cream flavors and sell their farm-fresh milk.

The Location

The ice cream shop is located on Maple View Farm, meaning it’s surrounded by rolling fields of farmland. Lots of people will park their cars in the parking lot and sit in their trunks to watch the sunset with their cones in hand. They also have many picnic tables for outside seating, and you’re able to sit on the grass and just enjoy the ice cream, view, and summer weather.

GRUB Durham

Homemade biscuits, steamy breakfast bowls, and a full coffee and mimosa bar are hardly what we’d consider “grub”... more like brunchy goodness!  At GRUB Durham, delicious food is just one of the many unexpected delights you’ll discover as you step through the doors of this bright and airy restaurant founded by childhood friends and Durham natives, Stacey Poston and Wendy Woods.  What started as a Saturday urge to get out of the house and into the Spring sunshine led us to GRUB, and we can’t wait to go back.

GRUB sits on the Northwest corner of Chapel Hill and Kent Street in Durham’s historic West End neighborhood.  You’ll recognize it by the red awnings and retro flare, including a neon sign out front reading…

John Chavis Memorial Park

John Chavis Memorial Park, located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, offers inclusive recreational play for all age groups. The park's highlight is the skywalk climb, featuring two towering slides- one is fast and steep while the other is a spiral tunnel. For younger visitors, there are two designated areas featuring smaller slides, climbers, swings and a spinner. The park also has natural play areas with wooden stepping stumps and ropes, along with adult exercise equipment.

In the summer months, kids can cool off at the splash pad next to the playground. There is also an indoor carousel next to the John Chavis Community Center. The community center has a gymnasium, indoor track and…

Seoul Garden

At Seoul Garden, it’s best to come hungry!  This delicious Korean Barbecue can be found at two locations – in Raleigh and in Cary – and you won’t want to miss it!   We weren’t sure what to expect, having gotten this recommendation from a friend and being fairly new to Korean cuisine.  But we were looking to bring some excitement to a Tuesday evening, and the thought of simmering soups, bibimbap and flavorful sides was hard to pass up.

Within moments of arrival, the aroma of fresh ingredients, well-seasoned sauces and charbroiled goodness confirmed exactly why Seoul Garden proudly claims nearly 100 five-star reviews on Tripadvisor and comes highly recommended by foodies around the Triangle.  The hostess sat us…

A Woodland Experience at Caffé Driade

I found myself staying within walking distance from Caffé Driade this week so I thought I’d check it out as part of my morning stroll. Caffé Driade is one of the most unique coffee spots in the Chapel Hill area. It’s basically built into the woods and accessible from Bolin Creek Greenway. It was 68 degrees, sunny, and warm this morning- a crazy shift from the entire day of thunderstorms during the week. I’m always looking for a new coffee shop to try out and coffee walks are the best kind of walks, so I’m excited to share this spot with you all.

Location

Right off Bolin Creek Greenway in East Chapel Hill, you can walk up a path through the woods and end up on the…
