Clyde Cooper’s Barbecue
At the intersection of South Wilmington and East Davie Street in downtown Raleigh, don’t be surprised if the tempting scent of smoked brisket wafts its way towards you before you can even read the neon signs of the iconic Clyde Cooper’s Barbecue. Over 85 years ago, the founder and namesake took a leap of faith with a $50 loan and gave life to his far fetched dream of starting a business in barbecue. Today, anyone who finds themselves downtown can stop in to experience all the flavors, southern hospitality and charm of Clyde Cooper’s Barbecue.
Find a seat in a comfy booth or high top, and begin the treasure hunt that is finding the many celebrities whose faces grace the walls amidst an assortment of eclectic decor, frames, and vintage signs. It turns out that Raleigh locals aren’t the only ones who make this joint a priority when they’re in the area! Given the dedication to quality and consistency, we’re not surprised. Since the beginning, Clyde prided himself on cooking with only the most quality ingredients, somehow accomplishing the most tender bites with the leanest cuts of pork. In the years since Clyde passed, the restaurant (now owned by friends of Clyde) has remained true to this cause, preserving and cooking the recipes that started it all.
Enjoy even one bite of barbecue pork, baby back ribs or burnt ends and we think you’ll see what we mean! The deliciousness doesn’t stop with the meaty main course, however. Barbecue is often associated with tasty sides that compliment the meal. At Clyde Cooper’s, the baked macaroni and cheese, cheerwine refried beans, tangy potato salad and coleslaw are so good you may just opt for the “Vegetarian Plate” which allows you to select up to four side items in addition to fries and pork skins. If you’re looking for heartier barbecue, consider the burnt ends sandwich or fried chicken.
Every first Friday of the month, the diner invites guests to participate in music trivia. We think the only thing more fun than trivia might be partaking in some of The Triangle’s most beloved BBQ at the same time! Though closed on Sunday and Monday, Clyde Cooler’s is open from 11-5 most other days. We can’t wait to see you at 327 South Wilmington Street in Raleigh!
