Old Mill Farm
This week we’re excited to share with you a quaint destination worth the trip no matter where you live around the Triangle. Old Mill Farm feels like something straight out of your favorite Hallmark movie, so you won’t want to miss it! With an environment equally playful for kids as it is zen for adults, the only real requirement here is that you have an appreciation for spending an afternoon under the trees with the sound of live music drifting across the farm, and a chance to pet sweet farm animals while you enjoy a bite from the featured food truck.
Even before walking down the oak-lined dirt road that leads to the main attractions, two gentle donkeys graze in the pasture closest to the entrance. Eager to score a handful of feed, they’re likely to trot up to the fence line where scratches seem to be a worthy substitute for the snack they hoped you’d bring them! As you approach the entrance, it won’t be long before your ears perk to the sounds of live music and laughter from families and friends enjoying a meal together under shady canopies and misters which fight off the summer heat. On the left, oversized Jenga and nostalgic carnival games offer family-friendly activities for all farm-goers.
For some, the draw of the farm includes the local brews offered at the bar, or the convenience of ordering a meal from the food truck before finding the perfect spot to take in the sights of the farm. With sprawling greenspace that beckons for a picnic blanket, and ample tables and benches throughout, the options are really endless. For others, it’s the open invitation to stroll the 14 acre property, joining the goats in their pen to witness their silly antics. Holidays at the farm are extra special, when some of the more tolerant goats are dressed in costumes and festive flare, like the patriotic bandanas seen at the 4th of July celebration. If you keep tabs on the website and plan ahead, the farm even offers exclusive opportunities to snuggle with their newest additions, like the baby lambs born this spring! A peaceful walk around the farm will also lead you to chickens, rabbits and sheep, all of whom are generally eager to put on a show for guests who approach their enclosure. Not to mention, a large pond is situated in the middle of the property, stocked with fish and ready to welcome anyone who wants to cast a line and try their luck. Fishing gear is available to rent at the farm.
Old Mill Farm stays busy with community events. Live music and activities are offered every Friday night, and alternating Saturday evenings offer another chance at catching local musicians at the farm’s “Saturdays at Sundown” events. For kids, Summer Farm camp provides a wonderful opportunity to spend a week with nature, fishing, tending to animals and collaborating on projects with other campers. Camp dates are still available through August, so it’s not too late if you’re looking for another fun summer experience for kids age 5-12! More information here!
Located at 8913 NC Highway 751 South in Durham, this farm really is a hidden gem, bursting with potential for fun with family and friends on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and every other Saturday evening. They do a fantastic job at keeping the website current, so be sure to find an upcoming event that calls your name. The animals will be anxiously awaiting your visit! https://www.oldmillfarmdurham.com
