By Chelsea Nallenweg

Glen Eden Pilot Park is a 20-acre scenic and family-friendly park located in a woodsy setting in northwest Raleigh, just outside the Beltline This awesome park is the perfect nature escape this spring and summer.

At the heart of the park is a newly updated playground, designed for a range of ages with multiple slides, swings, a spinner, and a separate giant tunnel slide that descends to a lower level of the play area. The rubberized surface is great for littles, and the surrounding trees provide lots of shade, making it ideal for those hot summer days coming up

There are paved trails that go through the surrounding woods that are perfect for walking, biking, or jogging. The park also serves as a key point on the House Creek Greenway Trail, a popular route for cyclists.

The Glen Eden Neighborhood Center sits within the park and features rooms available for rent. An outdoor deck attached to the center overlooks a peaceful pond area, adding to the park’s nature charm. There is also a giant basketball court and picnic shelter.

Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, a quiet place to walk, or a shaded playground, Glen Eden Pilot Park truly has it all. With something for every age and interest, this park is not just a summer escape—it’s a year-round gem

Gipson Play Plaza - Dorothea Dix Park Raleigh

 By Chelsea Nallenweg

Gipson Play Plaza, an 18.5-acre adventure park located within Dorothea Dix Park, welcomed the public for the first time during a three-day grand opening celebration from last June 6 to June 8. This incredible new park is now the largest adventure playground in the Southeast

Gipson Play Plaza features a wide range of play areas designed for all ages. Slide Valley includes four multi-story climbing towers connected by a mix of stationary and swaying bridges with several large slides. Past the climbing structure is a rock wall that leads to another giant slide and a cool tunnel slide that goes through the ground There are also a few smaller slides for little ones. There is an area with tables overlooking the playground area for caregivers to sit and watch, and this entire slide area is fenced in—but it’s big There are also paved sidewalks throughout the playground/park area to bring a stroller.

Be sure to bring a change of clothes because the other half of the playground area has lots of cool water features Fountain Plaza features an interactive splash pad and waterfall inspired by the waterfalls of western North Carolina. Watermill Mountain offers a hands-on water play experience that includes pumps, spouts, pulleys, and other water movement elements based on the mechanics of Historic Yates Mill. There is also a large sand play area known as the Sand Bowl, designed for younger children to dig, build, and slide.

In addition to the primary play areas, the plaza includes beautiful gardens, picnic zones, a 91-foot-long row of swings for both kids and adults, and a sensory maze. The sensory maze is designed for kids to touch, make noise, and inspire imagination. Over 1,000 trees and 110,000 plants have been installed to support long-term landscape growth and create future shade throughout the park.

Food and beverages are available at the House of Many Porches Market, which serves coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads, snacks, and alcoholic beverages. There are Adirondack and rocking chairs on the lawn and porch of the cafe, making this a relaxing place to hang out. Restrooms are located inside the cafe. The park also includes very nice, air-conditioned restrooms near the water fountain area, designed to accommodate families with young children; one even has a shower

Parking is available in multiple lots around the park. On weekends, visitors may also use a free park-and-ride shuttle to access the site. Make sure to add this to your list of parks to check out in the Triangle this weekend

True Food Kitchen

By Maddy Cook

If North Hills hasn’t already become your go-to for upscale shopping and dining in Raleigh, the new addition, True Food Kitchen, might just make it so This healthy concept restaurant has been gaining popularity with each new location, and we’re so excited to welcome it to Raleigh With a philosophy built upon research indicating the wonders of oils derived from fruits like olives and avocados, True Food brings a creative menu full of flavor-loaded drinks, dishes and desserts to each city it opens its doors in.

What to expect from a dining experience void of the usual seed-based oils that are so commonly used? For starters, everything tasty Thanks to an innovative team creating the best combinations from fruit-derived oils, you may be surprised to find Sourdough Pizzas, Buffalo Chicken, and Lasagna Al Pesto on the menu. We indulged in the Edamame Dumplings with white truffle oil as an appetizer, and they were so delicious I may just have to order them as an entree next time. Then again, the plant-based double cheeseburger was among the best meat-free patties I’ve ever had And the pepperoni pizza was exactly the comfort food we needed on a rainy evening.

Diners will enjoy a lush atmosphere with greenery and a trendy, modern aesthetic while sipping exquisite cocktail concoctions mixed up with ingredients like blood orange and hibiscus lemon aperitif. Between the fresh beverages and the indulgent (yet healthy) entrees, we loved that we left True Food feeling satisfied but not sluggish This coming Valentine's Day, stop into North Hills to enjoy this new dining experience for yourself. Equally appealing on weekdays for a light bite as on weekends for a robust culinary experience, we think you’ll find yourself returning just as we already have Find True Food Kitchen directly across from Restoration Hardware.

Learning Express Gifts Slime Bar - Cary

By Chelsea Nallenweg

If you’re looking for a fun and creative indoor activity this winter near Raleigh, head to one of the Kawaii Slime Bars inside Learning Express Gifts They have slime bars at the Learning Express Gift Shop locations at Cary, North Hills, and Raleigh Tucked right inside the toy and gift store, this interactive experience is a big hit with kids and a perfect way to spend about an hour getting hands-on and imaginative.

The slime-making process is easy and guided, with a friendly staff member on hand to help kids through each step. First, you choose your slime base. There are tons of clear slime colors to pick from, and each one has its own unique scent—like cotton candy, fruit punch, grape, or bubblegum Each slime container is $14.99. The slime base is already made, so kids can jump straight into the fun part: customizing.

Next, it’s time to add toppings—this is where things get really fun for kids It is like a make-your-own ice cream bar, but with slime There are dozens of toppings to choose from—glitter, colorful beads, rainbow sprinkles, and even tiny themed charms. Sushi charms, unicorns, rainbows—they have it all Keep in mind the more toppings you add, the more it will cost since it is by weight. It is .25 cents per gram.

You can also choose to enhance the texture of your slime by adding instant snow or air-dry clay, which gives it a cool fluffy or buttery feel. These texture add-ins are totally optional but can make the final slime even more unique. Once all the toppings and extra textures are picked out, everything is weighed to determine the cost, and you pay at the counter.

Then comes the fun part: mixing it all together. There are tables and chairs next to the slime bar where kids can sit and blend their slime base with toppings and texture elements. They have rolling pins for kids to use. It’s satisfying, sensory, and calming to mix it all up and watch the transformation unfold.

Once finished, the slime is packed back into its container to take home. If stored properly in its sealed container, the slime should last two to three months

The Kawaii Slime Bar at Learning Express Gifts is a delightful, hands-on experience for kids of all ages—and a great way to spend a winter morning or afternoon indoors

Lake Myra Christmas Lights in downtown Wendell is a magical holiday tradition that brings the season to life with thousands of sparkling lights and festive music And the best part about this event is that it’s FREE They do have a donation box to help keep this tradition going each year. It began at a local man, Don Williams’, house over 25 years ago and grew so big that the town of Wendell worked with him to move it to their downtown It’s one of the largest computerized light shows in North Carolina.
