9 Fears About Moving to Raleigh (And What’s Actually True)

Thinking about moving to Raleigh, NC, but have a few concerns holding you back? You’re definitely not alone. We talk with people relocating to the Triangle all the time, and many of them come to us with the same questions about safety, schools, neighborhoods, weather, the home-buying process, and even snakes!

In our latest YouTube video, we break down some of the most common fears we hear from people considering a move to Raleigh and share what we’ve learned from living and working right here in the Triangle. Here’s a quick recap!

1. Is Raleigh Safe?

This is one of the first questions we hear from people considering a move to the area. Raleigh is the largest city in the region, so naturally, people want to know how it compares with the surrounding suburbs.

We also have smaller Wake County communities like Cary, Morrisville, and Apex, which were highlighted in our video when discussing safety around the Triangle.

2. Which Area Will Fit My Lifestyle?

This might be the most common question we get: “Where should I live?”

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. When we help someone narrow down their options, we look at things like budget, commute, lot size, new construction versus established homes, and proximity to the places they visit most.

If you want a suburban feel, Holly Springs might be worth exploring. If new construction is high on your list, Wendell could be an option. If you love historic neighborhoods and have a higher budget, you may want to explore Inside the Beltline in Raleigh.

3. What Are the Schools Like?

Schools around the Triangle can be complicated, especially if you’re relocating from an area where your address automatically determines the school your child attends.

Here in Wake County, families have access to traditional public schools, magnet programs, charter schools, and private schools. Enrollment caps and reassignment can also affect school assignments.

That’s why we always recommend doing your research and, when needed, speaking with a local school consultant before choosing a home based solely on a particular school.

4. Is Raleigh a Good Place to Raise a Family?

As parents ourselves, this is something we really appreciate about living in the Triangle.

We have parks, greenways, playgrounds, museums, and tons of opportunities to get outside with the kids. And when the weather doesn’t cooperate, places like Marbles Kids Museum and the Museum of Life and Science give families plenty of indoor options too.

We have four boys, so having plenty of places where they can get outside and burn some energy is definitely important to us!

5. Will I Find My Community?

We know moving somewhere new isn’t only about finding the right house. You also want to know whether you’ll be able to make friends and feel like you belong.

One thing we love about the Triangle is how many people have relocated here from other states and countries. The communities throughout the area can feel very different from one another, which means there are plenty of opportunities to explore and find a place that feels comfortable for you.

6. What Is a Due Diligence Deposit?

If you’re moving from another state, this one can be a surprise.

North Carolina's due diligence deposit is paid directly to the seller and is generally nonrefundable if you decide to terminate the contract. If you make it to closing, however, that money is credited back to you.

It can sound intimidating, which is exactly why we think buyers need to understand how it works before submitting an offer.

7. Should I Worry About Hurricanes and Flooding?

We get weather questions all the time.

North Carolina can experience hurricanes and severe weather, but living in Raleigh is different from living directly on the coast. That doesn’t mean weather-related risks don’t exist, but Raleigh doesn’t experience them in exactly the same way as coastal areas like Wilmington.

8. Are There Really That Many Bugs?

Yes—we have bugs! ????

Mosquitoes, spiders, cockroaches, and other creepy-crawlies are simply part of living in North Carolina. If you’re moving from somewhere where bugs aren’t as common, it might take a little getting used to.

But from our experience living here, it’s really not something we think should scare you away from the Triangle.

9. What About Copperheads?

Yes, copperheads live in North Carolina too—but no, you’re not going to walk outside every morning and be greeted by one!

They tend to be reclusive, so being aware of where they may hide and taking normal precautions can go a long way. We certainly wouldn't let the possibility of encountering one keep you from enjoying everything the Triangle has to offer.
