Downtown Clayton just got a lot more exciting with the opening of Aaktun Coffee + Bar—a fresh, vibrant restaurant with a Tulum inspired atmosphere! This new spot is the second location for Aaktun, joining its sister restaurant in Durham. Executive chef and two-time James Beard semifinalist Oscar Diaz, along with the Mezcalito Group Inc., has brought his signature creative vision to Clayton, blending Latin and Caribbean influences in a stylish new restaurant.
The vibe at Aaktun is tropical, modern, and very well thought out. It features a mix of traditional tables both inside and outside, and “Tulum inspired cenotes”, which are cozy, dimly lit, built-in wall booths. There are also beautiful plants everywhere making it feel tropical. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a laid-back meal in a more private corner they have lots of different seating options.
The menu at Aaktun is packed with inventive and satisfying dishes. Tropical shrimp and grits showcase Mexican purple corn grits, shrimp, kale, and a rich diabla-encocado sauce. Tempura fish tacos come with crispy snapper, tropical slaw, and coconut matcha salsa. If you’re in the mood for something a little heartier, the Huli Huli chicken skewers are marinated and paired with pickled pineapple and salsa criolla. Guests also rave about the totchos—tater tot nachos offered in vegetarian and supreme versions. They also have crave-worthy sides like crispy brussels sprouts that look just as good as they taste!
Breakfast lovers will enjoy this restaurant also! Aaktun serves up delicious options like the chorizo breakfast sandwich and a rich brekky butter burger. And for those with a sweet tooth, they offer French toast, cheesecake, and tres leches cake. They also serve fun drinks like Mexican hot chocolate, mama coco matcha, or tropical passion juice.
Aaktun is now open in downtown Clayton, serving up creative eats, bold flavors, and tropical flair—all in a vibrant an unique space. It’s a perfect new and unique restaurant for dining in the Raleigh area!
