Aaktun

It’s the beginning of a new year, and what better time to shake up your usual dining out options! If you’re looking for an exceptionally unique dining experience, we know just the place! At 704 Ramseur Street in downtown Durham, a quaint coffee shop and bar by the name of Aaktun bursts with personality. Brick walls broken up by dozens of plants and the glow of cozy accent lights create the ultimate atmosphere for studying, working or visiting with friends. But this charming cafe is so much more than meets the eye!

In almost speakeasy-like fashion, those looking for the half of Aaktun that offers a superb culinary experience must enter through the coffee shop and take a left to stroll down a moody hall and towards the tucked-away oasis that is the restaurant. Inside, diners enjoy unmatched cocktails, food and ambience.

Tempura Fish Tacos, Short Rib Sancocho, and Shrimp & Grits are among the amazing dishes served on the menu. We opted for the Jerk Chicken and Pork Belly Adobo and were anything but disappointed! Each meal arrived plated as if a piece of art, atop rice and dressed with complimentary sauces, and herb garnishes. The flavors were vibrant and unique, brought to diners by two-time James Beard semi-finalist Oscar Diaz. Partner an outstanding meal with a fanciful cocktail, many of which are served in festive tiki glasses that turn heads as they make their way from the one-of-a-kind bar to the dining space.

If you’re ready to step out of the box and into the Tulum-inspired vacation setting that is Aaktun, plan your visit any day from 11-3 or 5-11 PM. And if it’s a crafty coffee you’re craving, stop in before 7PM for an experience you won’t soon forget. Enjoy it… we surely did!
