Carolina Coffee Shop: 1922
Recently, I was at a UNC baseball game and a trivia question came up asking, “What is the oldest restaurant on Franklin Street?” To my surprise, the answer was Carolina Coffee Shop. Carolina Coffee Shop has been serving the town of Chapel Hill since 1922, over 100 years! Anyone who is familiar with the Chapel Hill area knows how quickly restaurants on Franklin come and go. So, staying around for that long is a big deal, and makes Carolina Coffee Shop a must-eat restaurant.
Brunch
My favorite time of day to eat at Carolina Coffee Shop is always for brunch. They have an extensive brunch menu and I like to try something new every time. They serve traditional North Carolina brunch ranging from pancakes and french toast to breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and chicken and waffles. You have the option to eat outside or inside, but I normally prefer outside because it’s the perfect place to people-watch and see the happenings of downtown Chapel Hill.
1922
Directly next to Carolina Coffee Shop is their cafe, 1922. On this day, I got a vanilla iced latte from their coffee shop to get a good start to my day and begin studying for my exam. Since it was exam season, every seat was full with college students getting their work done. 1922 is a unique addition to Carolina Coffee Shop because you can give the historical establishment a quick try without committing to an entire meal.
Final Remarks
Carolina Coffee Shop also has a bar that doubles as an event venue at night. So, I’ve been a coffee shop goer at all hours of the day. They have numerous cocktails and an entire section on their cocktail menu dedicated to coffee cocktails. I would definitely recommend giving Carolina Coffee Shop a try. The service is great and there are always plenty of customers making the energy lively and a great place to enjoy good food!
