Cham Thai

If you’re looking for authentic Thai food in the RDU-area, look no further. Cham Thai is available right in your backyard (Carrboro). Consider going during a holiday (I’ll explain later).

The Atmosphere

You have the choice of sitting inside the restaurant or outside overlooking the corner of Carrboro’s East Main Street. My friend and I chose to sit inside and I will say, it was decorated. Since it was nearing the end of February, there were Valentine’s Day streamers hanging up and I was impressed by the festivity. You guys will have to let me know what they have in store for the other months.

Their walls were also covered in art and various picture frames. Overall, the inside was well lit by the sunlight coming through the windows and despite the restaurant being somewhat small, it still felt very open.

I imagine when the weather warms up it would be nice to enjoy various Thai dishes in their outside seating. You’d definitely have a good view of people watching the Carrboro passersby.

The Thai Cuisine

The “Authentic Thai Cuisine” advertised on their website didn’t disappoint. I’ve unfortunately yet to go to Thailand, so maybe I don’t know best, but in my taste it was delicious. I ordered the green chicken curry and it was the perfect blend of creamy, a little spicy, and full of veggies.

They also gave quite big portions which was a major plus because I’m a big proponent of leftovers. It’s almost like a two for one special. My friend ordered stir fry mixed vegetables with chicken. We both happily ate and chatted away.

The Location

Cham Thai is walkable from Carrboro town center and there’s plenty of parking in a nearby parking deck. It’s one of a few small restaurants in the shopping center but it still doesn’t hold the monopoly on Thai food. Thai Station is another popular Thai restaurant nearby. I’ll have to reserve my judgment and rating until I’ve had the chance to report on both.

It’s also right near Cat‘s Cradle, the popular concert venue. Consider catching dinner before your show!

Final Remarks

Cham Thai was a great place to share lunch with a friend. The green curry hit the spot and the decor was intriguing. I’ll have to stop by again to see if the garlands are a year-round thing.
