Clemmons Educational State Forest - Clayton, NC

Clemmons Educational State Forest is one of North Carolina’s six Educational State Forests operated by the NC Forest Service, created to help people, especially school groups and children, learn about forest ecosystems and forest management. Located in Johnston County near Clayton, it sits between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, where there is a mix of different types of trees, streams, a pond, and interesting rock formations.
As the first Educational State Forest in North Carolina, Clemmons opened in 1976 and has long served as a model for environmental education in the state. The forest features well-marked, self-guided trails, and some even have interactive learning activities. Along the paths, visitors can find exhibits and displays that explain the ecology of a managed forest in an engaging, hands-on way.
Visitors can explore several themed trails, including the Forest Geology Trail with “Talking Rocks,” the Forest Demonstration Trail, the Watershed Extension Loop, and the popular “Talking Tree” Trail. This .7-mile loop is a hit for families with young children. Along the way, kids can stop at stations and press buttons to hear recordings about different trees in the forest, making it educational and fun while walking through the woods.
In addition to the trails, Clemmons Educational State Forest also offers outdoor education workshops, ranger-led classes, picnic facilities, and a variety of programs designed to deepen understanding of North Carolina’s forest resources.
