Guglhupf Bakery & Restaurant Has it All

This restaurant made me rethink everything I’ve ever known about overnight oats. Let me explain. After walking into their outside order and seating area on a beautiful Thursday afternoon, lunch was on my mind, so even I was confused after I made the gametime decision of ordering overnight oats. It’s such a breakfast choice, but I was drawn to it for some reason.

I’ve never been one to think overnight oats were the holy grail of breakfast, but honestly, my experience at Guglhupf was life-changing. They served me the best overnight oats I’d ever had. I ate it all in under 5 minutes. It was delicious, and I really can’t wait to go back and try more of their food. They had so much variety from breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, to even an entire bakery with goods to choose from. That’s if I can ever order anything other than the overnight oats. But, I digress.

The Atmosphere

Guglhupf Bakery is an open outdoor and indoor restaurant, cafe, and bakery all wrapped up into one artsy location in the southern area of Durham. There's plenty of parking and even more places to sit. The outside of the cafe is lively with fountains, plants, art, and various metal sculptures. Needless to say, you will not get bored with the ambiance.

The restaurant also hosts events that range from painting and wine tasting to trivia nights,  and even live music. I experienced Guglhupf in the afternoon, but I imagine the dinner scene is immaculate. The entire outside of the restaurant, including the outside seating, had intricate metal sculptures designed around garden areas and water fountains. There was also an art mural incorporated into their ordering station.

The Menu

I’ve obviously already mentioned the overnight oats so I’ll set that aside for now. The restaurant itself serves contemporary southwestern European (Swabian) food with local ingredients and a German twist. Their cafe drink menu has a seasonal special of hot chocolate, which at this time of year, is their red velvet hot chocolate. I ordered it and I have similar feelings to the hot chocolate as I did the overnight oats.

Guglhupf has a brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails, and coffee menu. That's five whole menus. Lots of food options and plenty of room for friends and family to dine and enjoy.

Final Remarks

Guglhupf Bakery & Restaurant delightfully surprised me. When you find a restaurant that checks the ambiance and food box, you have a winner. Not to mention, I found this super satisfying video on their website of them baking fresh goods in their bakery.
