Ideal's Sandwich & Grocery
By Cindy Shi
The first thing we overheard in line at Ideal’s Sandwich & Grocery was someone saying, “This is within the top 10 sandwich shops in the entire country.” Bold words, but after one visit, it’s easy to understand why.
Founded by best friends Ian Bracken and Paul Chirico, who met at the Culinary Institute of America, Ideal’s is a true labor of love. Drawing on their Northern roots in Boston and New York, the pair brought a serious sandwich game to the South when they opened Ideal’s in the summer of 2021. What they’ve created isn’t just a sandwich shop; it’s a celebration of community, craft, and comfort food done right.

We started with the Chicken Cutlet, Rabe & Cheese, featuring perfectly cooked thin chicken cutlets layered with lemony broccoli rabe, sharp provolone, and a luscious garlic mayonnaise. It’s bright, crisp, and indulgent all at once—the kind of sandwich that leaves you quietly nodding after each bite.

Next up was the Harlem Chopped Cheese, piled high and dripping with flavor. The real standout here? The chop sauce. This signature Ideal’s touch, combined with cherry peppers, adds a bold, tangy kick that transforms a good sandwich into a great one.
For a classic done right, the Italiano hit all the nostalgic notes. We chose the pressed rosemary focaccia round, an upgrade you can request on any sandwich, and it was absolutely the right move. Packed with premium meats, pepperoncini, and giardiniera, it’s a tribute to old-school Italian delis.

Don’t skip the homemade garlic & onion potato chips; they’re crisp, salty, and addictively savory. Though we couldn’t fit dessert this time, word on the street (and in the line) is that the brown butter chocolate chip cookies are the perfect sweet ending.
Ideal’s is open Thursday through Monday, 12–3 p.m. (or until sellout). Expect lines to form as early as 11:15 a.m. on weekends, and plan for a 30–60 minute wait. But trust us, it’s worth every minute. This isn’t just a sandwich stop; it’s a Durham dining experience that feels as personal as it is delicious.
