The Traffic Garden at Dix Park
By:Chelsea Nallenweg
The Traffic Garden at Gipson Play Plaza in Dix Park is a unique space where kids can learn the basics of bike, pedestrian, and road safety! Designed like a miniature street system, it features colorful roads, intersections, stop signs, and bike lanes built at kid-scale. Kids can ride their bikes or scooters, or walk the paths, while practicing safe street habits.
This temporary pop-up is open for self-guided play and is located right in front of the entrance to the Gipson Play Plaza playground. You’ll want to bring along a bike, scooter, or a good pair of sneakers so your child can make the most of the experience. There are folding chairs set up along the sides for parents to sit and watch. The traffic garden is free to visit, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 am to 7 pm and is best suited for ages three through ten.
If you’re looking for a unique outdoor activity in Raleigh, the Traffic Garden is a wonderful way for kids to build confidence on wheels, stretch their imaginations, and learn valuable safety skills before heading out on bigger roads and trails!
