YoPo: The Yogurt Pump
Normally I would consider myself an ice cream person over frozen yogurt. But, when it comes to The Yogurt Pump on Franklin I start to question my values. The local, family-owned, frozen yogurt shop became North Carolina’s first frozen yogurt shop in 1982. Since my existence in 2003, it has become my favorite spot for froyo. Not many establishments have been able to stand the tests of time on Franklin, especially with rent costs. That speaks to the sincerity of my recommendation to give YoPo a try.
Location
Just off the main drag on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, and a bit tucked away near He’s Not Here, is YoPo. It’s recognizable from its red sign with the YoPo logo sticking out from the brick wall that makes up the exterior. There are a few parking options on Franklin, but I would recommend parking in the Target parking deck across the street. It’s free for the first 45 minutes and relatively inexpensive if you happen to exceed that time.
Froyo
YoPo cycles through different flavors but some highlights from when I went were Southern Strawberry, Raspberry Pomegranate, and Apple Pie. I ended up ordering a medium cup of European Chocolate and Peanut Butter Froyo with strawberries, brownies, and Oreos as toppings.
With sizes ranging from tiny to quart, cup and cone options, and picking up to three toppings, the Froyo is endlessly customizable. Still, if none of these flavors are good enough for you, YoPo offers a unique option on its website to request a flavor. So, if you’re feeling creative, give that a shot.
Deals
When you go, you’ll have the option to sign up for YoPo texts to receive exclusive deals. I warn you this marketing is effective. I’ve come to look forward to the texts I receive for “YoPo Wednesday” and “Buy one get one free pint.” They also have a reward system you can join to earn points that lead to free froyo.
Final Remarks
Pro Tip: Go to YoPo on Wednesday.
As a text-receiving YoPo endorser, they most always have a good deal on YoPo Wednesdays. Voted “Carolina’s Finest” for 13 years running, The Yogurt Pump is a Chapel Hill staple and offers a great summer treat.
